چکیده
The purpose of this document is to present the work done thus far towards the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in order to complete the transfer viva. As the title suggests, the aim of this project is to improve the engineering of router software by making experimental methodologies more accessible to network researchers. This report begins by stating the goals of this project. Since or approach to solving the stated problem makes use of programmable network technology, a brief survey of this research area is presented before we discuss the rationale behind our approach. The rational includes empirical results show the usefulness of our work in both the academic and industrial community. We go on to informally present the complexities of the policy language intend to control our system; the functionality of the compiler that process these policies is also discussed. The way in which the system makes use of existing programmable router technology is also included. Although we have defined the system fairly extensively, it has not yet been implemented due to time restrictions. The evaluation section of this report outlines the way in which our system will be evaluated.
